With the dull days of winter phasing into the fresh greenness of spring, it's a great time to come visit us here at Ufford Park. From woodland and grassland to coastal areas, we have the good fortune to be surrounded by diverse habitats and varied wildlife. Of course, there is our 2-mile trail, but if you fancy going further afield here is a selection of local Nature Reserves worth a visit.
Foxburrow Farm Nature Reserve 67 hectares in total, the site contains a mix of arable and grazing land with wildlife habitats. There are numerous events to get the little ones involved, and it s only a 5-minute drive from Ufford Park. From March to the end of August is the best time to visit to enjoy the best of the wildflowers and birdsong, but the site is open year-round portraying various seasonal changes.
Bromeswell Green Nature Reserve A small site at only 7 hectares, but there is a great variety of terrain on offer including woodland, wet meadows, saltmarsh and the River Deben. The river attracts waders at low tide, and kingfishers can be spotted as well. The woodland attracts numerous other birds and on warm sunny days basking common lizards can be found. All this and only a 5-minute drive away.
Rendlesham Forest While not a nature reserve per se, it is a fabulous forest in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and just a 10-minute drive up the road. With 3 walking trails, 2 cycling trails, play and picnic areas, as well as orienteering and events it s easy to spend a day in nature here.
Hollesey Marshes A 15-minute drive could take you to the new freshwater lagoon which has been created at Hollesley Marshes - a site of coastal grazing marsh with many species of breeding waders during the spring, as well as migratory birds year-round. There are dragonflies and grassland butterflies to be seen during the summer months, but owls are better spotted in winter.
Simpson's Saltings Nature Reserve 25 hectares located behind the RSPB car park at Hollesley Marshes, you can follow the footpath along the river wall to see rare saltmarsh and coastal plants as well as a great view toward the Ore estuary.
Orford Ness National Nature Reserve Just over a 20-minute drive away, Orford Ness is a fascinating combination of nature and military history. Accessed by ferry, tickets are only sold on the day and are limited so it s best to arrive early. Check the website for opening days and times to avoid disappointment.
Captain's Wood Nature Reserve A 20-minute drive will take you to the 63-hectare Captain s Wood has a 3km circular walking trail taking you through the different varieties of trees from oak and birch to hazel, Scots pine and sweet chestnut. Fallow deer roam freely, and in the spring there is a magnificent display of bluebells.
